Britain’s youth riders showed strong results at Wellington CDI (8 – 9 June 2024), as the Hampshire venue played host to the final observation trial for the summer’s FEI European Championships.

Abigail Gray and George Clooney B.S (pictured above) were dual winners at Pony FEI level, scoring consistent results of 73.190% and 73.559% for two superb Team and Individual tests. Abigail and the British-bred grey gelding have come of age this year following their successful visit to Le Mans in 2023 for the FEI Pony European Championships, Abigail’s first team appearance.

At Junior level the accolades were split between 2023 team medallists Ruby Hughes and Myles Graham. On board Carl Hester’s Brioso, a new ride for this season, Warwickshire’s Ruby Hughes produced the sole test to earn over 70% to claim Saturday’s Team competition; before the experienced Myles Graham recreated some stellar form with Caroline Bell’s Nibeley Union Hit to win the Individual test with 71.470%.

The Young Rider tour was also split between two short-listed riders. Oliver Gould and Amanda Towle’s Virtue were victorious in the Team competition, rewarded 69.853% by Sandy Phillips (GBR – E), Mariette Sanders-Van Gansewinkel (NED – C) and Hans Voser (SUI – M). Isobel Lickley placed second in the Team test with her parent’s smart mare Katniss, and went one better in the Individual, recovering from a challenging Team ride on board the talented stallion Nymphenburg's First Ampere to top the Individual contest with 72.108%.

Gloucestershire’s Ella-Grace Dovey continues to add wins to her record with new partner Sheepcote Jackson, owned by David Pincus. The liver chestnut gelding looked a picture on the way to two Children on Horses wins; the combination earned 74.950% in the Team test and 76.820% in the Individual test.

2023 Young Rider European Champion Annabella Pidgley brought her Senior Nations Cup partner Gio to the U25 contest with great success. The 19-year-old rider delivered two plus 72% scores with the Apache-sired chestnut, owned by her mother Sarah Pidgley, alongside a duo of runner-up positions with Gio’s gifted stablemate Vamos Amigo.
