The NAF Five Star Hartpury Festival of Dressage staged five days of Premier League competition alongside its annual CDI3*/CPEDI3* (07 – 11 July 2021). Spectators were treated to a high quality entry of British dressage talent as Hartpury brought the curtain down on the 2021 Premier League season.
In the final days before journeying to Tokyo, local girl Charlotte Dujardin took the opportunity of competing in the Hartpury Premier League classes with her up-and-coming horses, landing both the LeMieux Grand Prix and the Elite Stallions Young Horse Prix St Georges.
Charlotte’s winning ride in Thursday’s LeMieux Grand Prix supported by The Rural Planning Practice, Florentina VI (pictured above), made her Grand Prix debut just a matter of weeks ago at Wellington Premier League where the mare was second to Charlotte’s Tokyo ride, Gio.
Florentina VI (Vivaldi x Rubels), who Charlotte co-owns with Paul and Wendy Dockley, is now 11 years old. The grey mare has emerged as a high calibre Grand Prix horse after an illustrious spell at Small Tour, when she dominated throughout 2018, and time at home consolidating the Grand Prix work. Here at Hartpury, she scored 76.48% from the judging panel of Penelope Lang (E), Cara Whitham (H), Michael Osinski (C), Isobel Wessels (M) and Sue McMahon (B), for a well-presented test showing super balance, harmony and composure.
London 2012 medallist Laura Tomlinson, who recently announced that she and her husband Mark are expecting their fourth child, was second with hot prospect Fallatijn Van Kairos (Vivaldi x Cabochon) - pictured above. The 11-year-old gelding, who Laura owns jointly with her mother, Ursula Bechtolsheimer, has much talent and energy. His aptitude indicates a bright future for the pair. Despite a costly error in the two-time changes they earned a PB of 73.50%. “[I’m] Thrilled with him – he’s such a fun horse to ride,” said Laura on social media.
Completing the top three on 69.22% was Ellie McCarthy and GB Londero Von Worrenberg (Londontime x Calypso II).
Charlotte Dujardin headed Saturday night’s Elite Stallions Young Horse Prix St Georges Championship, for horses aged seven to nine, with Carl Hester and Coral Ingham’s Imhotep (pictured above). Eight-year-old Imhotep won Thursday’s qualifier with 76.22% before earning another 76%-plus in Saturday’s gala evening finale in the Hartpury Arena. The Everdale x Vivaldi gelding has Grand Prix written all over him and has an unblemished record since making his Small Tour debut earlier this year.
Second place in both the qualifier and championship belonged to Michael Eilberg and the powerful bay gelding, Dante VX (Dante Weltino x Quattro B) - pictured below. Dante, winner of the BD Seven-Year-Old Championship in 2020, is owned by Nichola Hannam and Geri Eilberg. He achieved a score of 74.34% in the qualifier followed by 73.43% in the Championship. “Dante didn’t disappoint in the young horse PSG final,” said Michael on social media. “I really wasn’t sure how he would cope with the atmosphere of the Hartpury indoor arena on gala night but he showed me how much, mentally, he has come on.
“I rode the trot safe and had a few little mistakes in the changes but he walked and halted super and that makes me so happy. I can’t wait to show what is really in the tank on this guy as I feel we are just touching the surface at the moment.”
Michael and Dante also won Wednesday’s Fairfax Saddles Prix St Georges supported by Equito Horseboxes Wales & West with a score of 72.63% ahead of Lucinda Elliott and the 10-year-old mare, Hawtins Bellegra (Belissimo M x Weltmeyer) owned and bred by Judith Davis. Lucinda also posted a decisive victory in the Fairfax Saddles PSG supported by Equestrian Stockholm with 10-year-old Hawtins Duchessa (Decamerone x Don Frederico) - pictured below - on a score of 72.23%.
There were ten horses from the Hawtins stud competing across the week from four-year-olds to international Grand Prix (Hawtins Delicato in the CDI3*) - a great testament to the success of Judith Davis’s breeding programme.
British Dressage thanks all the class sponsors and the team at Hartpury for putting on a fantastic event. Congratulations to all the winners and to all those who took part.
