Charlotte Fry and Glamourdale posted personal best scores in the CDI4* Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special, whilst Dylan Deutrom and San Marco claimed their first international wins at Opglabbeek CDI at Sentower Park in Belgium (30 March – 03 April 2022).
Opglabbeek is the first European outdoor show of the season. This year however the weather gods were not onside, challenging the event with biting winds and sleet throughout and forcing the organisers to move some of the classes indoors.
Unfazed by the unseasonably baltic conditions, Lottie (26) and Van Olst Horses’ 11-year-old stallion Glamourdale (Lord Leatherdale x Negro) - pictured in 2021 - valiantly delivered an outstanding career-best performance of 77.696% in the Grand Prix, ahead of Sweden’s Patrik Kittel with his new ride, Fuhur 6 (74.717%). The British duo later took the Grand Prix Special, held indoors, on a phenomenal PB of 80.979% for a performance full of power and poise to finish more than six percent in front of their closest challenger, Kittel (74.277%).
“Glamourdale left us with goosebumps yesterday after the most incredible test, the first time scoring over 80% in the Grand Prix Special,” said Lottie on social media. “No words for how amazing he is…”
She also presented her younger ride Inclusive in his first international Grand Prix, scoring 69.087%. The nine-year-old Everdale son, brimming with enthusiasm skilfully harnessed by Lottie, showed that he’s another exciting prospect out of the Van Olst stable. The pair later achieved a podium place in the Freestyle with 73.975%, behind the Netherlands’ Marieke van der Putten and Torveslettens Titanium and the home nation’s Larissa Pauluis with Flambeau.
In the CDI2* Dylan Deutrom and San Marco, competing at their first overseas international together, delivered an exciting double win amongst strong company. Dylan (24), who is stable rider at Hicks Equestrian in Hampshire, rode two super-harmonious tests to win the Prix St Georges and Intermediate I with scores of 71.422% and 71.617% respectively on the Status Quo x Gribaldi 12-year-old.
“I’m just over the moon,” said Dylan afterwards “I was really pleased with how he [San Marco] was. He was so settled at the show and he loves to compete.”
San Marco rose to prominence when he won the Shearwater British Dressage Young Horse 6YO Championship in 2016 with the late Caroline Church, and he is now owned by Caroline’s son William Deans and her twin sister, Sarah Church.
Dylan was also well-placed in the CDIU25 classes with Matt Hicks and Sarah Warry’s 14-year-old Hanoverian gelding Sunlit Uplands (Don Henrico x Hitchcock). The pair achieved sixth place in both the U25 Grand Prix (68.504%) and the U25 Grand Prix Freestyle (73.042%).
“I’m so lucky having such wonderful horses to ride and train, and to be able to get to this sort of show,” said Dylan. “I’m lucky that I’m in this position and would like to thank Matt Hicks for all his support.”
Myles Graham (14), competing in the Pony and Junior divisions at his first overseas CDI since 2020, gave Caroline Bell’s Nibeley Union Hit a super ride for 70.245% to achieve a podium place (third) in the Junior Individual Test.
The British-bred mare, known at home as Una, was campaigned by Caroline’s daughter, Rebecca, to international success at Junior and Young Rider level including a place on the British team at the Young Rider Europeans in 2019. The Nibeley Union Jack x Sandro Hit 15-year-old has been competed by Myles since August last year during which time he’s competed in Juniors and Ponies concurrently.
“Wow, what an amazing show it has been out in Opglabbeek!” said Myles on social media. “I have come away with lots of lessons learnt for the future and had a fabulous time. Today I finished the show off with riding Una in the kür and finished eighth. Huge thank you to Mrs B (Caroline Bell) for staying behind to watch her girl dance! Well done to all the other GBR riders too, everyone really supported each other.”
In the hotly contested Young Rider classes, Caitlin Burgess and her 2021 Young Rider team horse Chocotof (by Lord Leatherdale) achieved consistently strong scores including a 70.686% Team Test and 72%-plus in the Freestyle, whilst Demi Howard-Cartwright and the evergreen 19-year-old gelding Fin C WE (Famos x Eiger III) posted solid scores in the Pony classes - 68.381% in the Team Test and 69.414% for twelfth place in the Individual.
Crystal Robinson-Long (14) enjoyed success in the high-scoring Children on Horses classes aboard her newly acquired Dutch mare, Evita Ronia. Triple winners at the recent Keysoe CDI and experiencing their first overseas CDI at Opglabbeek, the duo rose to the challenge for fifth in the Team Test and sixth in Individual with scores of 71.500% and 70.301% respectively.
