Thoroughbreds showcased their graceful athleticism at the Cavago Associated Championships held at Onley Grounds Equestrian (22 October 2024).
In their first year competing at the Cavago Associated Championships, Lauren Lanik (pictured above) and Sew N Sew (Power Blade x Montjeu) were crowned Thoroughbred Novice overall champions with a score of 68.61%.
A delighted Lauren explained that their victory was unexpected: "Given this was our first time at the Associated Championships, we were very surprised to win!It was amazing to be in the warm-up surrounded by the same breed of horse in your class, but still see the huge variety of types that compete across the discipline.”
The pair also placed fifth in the Elementary Silver and sixth overall on 64.30%. Reflecting on their test at the next level up, Lauren said, “We have only recently stepped up to Elementary and were so pleased to come sixth, given we are still so new to this level, but it’s definitely something for us to aim to improve on next year!”
Lauren bought Mega six years ago as a five-year-old to show jump primarily. However, three years ago she was diagnosed with Kissing Spine which required surgery. Thankfully with the fantastic support of the team around her Lauren successfully rehabilitated Mega and has since discovered the dressage bug.
Having never taken part in a BD competition until 2022, the pair have enjoyed progressing through the levels together and look forward to returning to the Championships next year.
Katy Ferrari, an animal artist from Leicestershire, was a standout competitor at the Championships, achieving champion titles across four classes aboard Julie Routledge-Martin’s Sirius Chesnut (Domedriver x Cadeaux Genereux). The pair not only secured the titles of Thoroughbred Medium overall champion and Advanced Medium Bronze champion, but they were also crowned the RoR Medium and Advanced Medium overall champions.
Proving the test is not over until it’s over, Leanne Jackson and Jazzwooderh (Erhaab x Flintwood) took the Thoroughbred Advanced Medium overall champion title with a score of 66.91% despite some unexpected moments: "Jazz decided to make up her own test and added in some flying changes." explained Leanne, posting on Facebook. However, the pair managed to regain their focus and pull it back with some outstanding movements to ultimately claim the victory. The combination also achieved the Thoroughbred Medium Silver champion title, finishing third overall.
Suffolk’s Emily Simpson and her 14-year-old gelding Vancouverite, by Dansili, had a busy Championships competing in five classes together; the highlight of their successful weekend was their outstanding performance in the Thoroughbred Prelim, which earned them the title of overall champions with a score of 68.54%.
Riding the 16-year-old Gowanauthat (Golan x Comanche Run), Susan Eady from Northamptonshire delivered two consistent performances, taking the Thoroughbred Intro overall title with 63.91% and placing fourth in the Prelim Bronze with 63.02%.
Congratulations to all our competitors and their wonderful thoroughbreds. Thanks go to title sponsors Cavago and host venue Onley Grounds for supporting this unforgettable event.
