Bury Farm High Profile Show: Lara Edwards and Jazzed Up triumph on Special debut

Lara Edwards and Jazzed Up picked up the red rosette in their first ever Grand Prix Special at this busy Bank Holiday show (27 - 29 August 2022), which had a great atmosphere and hot competition.

Jazzed Up (Jazz x Ferro) - pictured above - is the second horse Lara has trained to Grand Prix level and she was given the ride when he was a tricky six-year-old. It took Lara six weeks to gain his trust and from then on he has been a wonderful partner, winning a number of regional titles on his way to Grand Prix.

“I never get off him feeling disappointed,” confided Lara who owns him with breeders Laura and Tracey Milner. “And never ever fall out with him. He wants to please and gives everything he’s got. He looks to me for his comfort zone and vice versa. I made mistakes in the one-temps and pirouettes but was pleased with the rest. We got 7.5s and 8s for our piaffe and passage.”

Lara lost the opportunity to take him to an international show earlier in the year as he panicked in the stable at a new water drinker and had three weeks off games with an injury. Her success at Bury Farm has given her an international qualifying score. She has trained with Rhett Bird for the last nine years, saying “He’s a perfectionist and I’m a perfectionist!”

The Grand Prix classes were won by Daniel Watson and Darren Hicks. Daniel’s ride is the lovely chestnut Breitling W mare, Aster Butterfly. The pair competed internationally earlier in 2022 but then Daniel decided to train her at home for a while to iron out a few little issues that had shown up. Pleased with her progress at home, Butterfly justified his decision to get between the white boards again with a 69%+ score in Sunday’s LeMieux Grand Prix class. He was pleased with how she performed in the piaffe and passage, half passes and extensions.

“It was a clean solid test apart from a mistake in the two-time tempis,” said Daniel. “She’s not a big horse, only 16hh. She’s got natural swing in her body but I have put the power in to get lift. I’m happy with how she’s improved.” Daniel was also third with Aster Berlin.

Darren Hicks won Saturday’s LeMieux Grand Prix with Kathleen Kröncke’s 16-year-old Standsfield (pictured above), who Kathleen competed internationally a few years ago. He has been riding him since the beginning of the year, competing in Premier League shows. “We’ve been having a few little mistakes and this was probably the easiest he’s been in the ring,” explained Darren. “The test flowed and felt pretty easy and I was pleased with the piaffe and passage. Hopefully we’ll do some international shows next year.

“He loves coming to shows. He goes wild when he sees the lorry and gets grumpy if he’s left at home!”

Inter II winner
Vicky Thompson-Winfield is riding Bento III for owner Sarah Douglas and the pair had a good win in the Stübben Inter II. Sarah has owned Bento for two years and she has spent the time improving the basics. Vicky is giving him some high level competition experience and the pair were fifth in Sunday’s Grand Prix – his first at the level.

Bento was sourced through Craig Rawlins and is proving he will be a great competition partner for Sarah. “He’s very talented, much more than we thought,” said Vicky. “He’s great fun for Sarah and good for building her confidence. He’s such a sweet boy and very easy to handle at shows.”

Saturday’s Saracen Horse Feeds Intermediate I was won by Jane Critchley riding Ally Croft’s Tantoni Dallaglio, an 11-year-old Danone gelding. Ally has owned ‘Larry’ since he was four. In 2016 they were Preliminary National Champions and he was reserve Elementary National Champion with Rebecca Hughes in 2018. While Ally also competes him, Jane is giving him Small Tour experience.

“He has a great attitude and is desperate to please,” explained Jane who is based in Uttoxeter and trains with Richard Davison. “He just needs to breathe sometimes! He’s a super-talented horse and has the ability to go up the levels.”

Nikki Barker and Dan Icarus won Friday’s Fairfax Saddles Prix St Georges and were second in the Saracen Horse Feeds Intermediate I. The nine-year-old, by Durable x Negro, is owned by Becky Fitton. “There were no big errors,” said Nikki. “He could have a bit more self-carriage, but it was a nice easy flowing test. He’s only low mileage as he’s so easy he tends to go to the bottom of the pile to be ridden!

“This was his first Inter I and he doesn’t know the lines at all. We had a few mistakes as it all comes up quite quickly, but we got 9s for his rein back and 8.5s for his walk.”

Nikki also won two Andrews Bowen Advanced Medium classes with the super-talented Shareholder II which husband Will bought for her during lockdown. “He’s an amazing horse,” enthused Nikki. “He gives you an incredible feeling and I always smile when I ride him. At 10 he’s a little bit behind but he can do bits of everything and it will all come together eventually.”

Brilliant comeback
Steph Eardley was a double winner with Ruxton Pinacolada who she’s owned for 12 years, since the mare was six, with victory at both PSG and Inter I levels. At the end of 2019, she got a split in one of her hooves which became a recurring problem, culminating in the hoof wall ‘exploding’ this February. “Because of her foot conformation, the splits start at the coronet band. My farrier Matt Price and his brother Haydn have worked a miracle to get her back on the road,” explained Steph who now has the scores she needs to compete internationally.

“She was on form this weekend and channelled her energy in a good way.”

Just out of university, Angus Corrie-Deane is already carving himself a career producing and selling young horses. At Bury Farm his talented nine-year-old Jack Johnson (Johnson x Scandic) produced a winning test at Inter I and a close second in the Inter I freestyle. “He’s the most lovable horse with a lot of charisma and presence which he’ll need as he progresses up the levels,” said Angus who bought ‘Jacob’ from Germany as a just-backed three-year-old. “He’s so powerful behind that he can drive himself into the ground so I’m working on getting him to ‘sit’ more. The test felt promising with moments of the true self-carriage.”

The family love Jacob so much they have bought his mum so there may be some exciting siblings in the future.

Angus debuted another stunning young horse, Don Darius II (Don Index x Stedinger), at Inter I, achieving a good score of over 68% and third place. He was bought by Angus’ mum, Mary, as a two-year-old. Darius will be at the LeMieux National Championships at Advanced Medium and PSG levels.

International Grand Prix rider, Hannah Biggs had two good Andrews Bowen Advanced Medium wins on her exciting ride, Dutch Harbour H (Dutchie). The Destano x Stedinger eight-year-old (pictured above) is owned by Norwegian client, Ada Bjordahl and has been with Hannah for two years.

“We’ve taken him slowly as he’s quite a big horse,” said Hannah. “He did qualify for the Nationals but we aren’t going because of the expense of going for one class – we came to Bury Farm instead! The High Profile is a great opportunity for a horse at this level to get experience in a championship atmosphere.

“The first couple of days I went easy with no pressure and then the last day I put my foot on the gas.” This was the perfect strategy as Dutchie ended the show with a super 72% in their final test. “He’s a really genuine horse and tries so hard. We’ll keep ticking away at this level and gradually step up to Small Tour at Premier Leagues and High Profile Shows next year.”

Jezz Palmer had a very successful three days with five wins on his three talented horses – Ketcher B, King IV and Romanno Weltino.

Emily Ivens’ Negro stallion Ketcher B is an impressive stamp of horse with a super temperament. He won the Advanced Medium Freestyle with 75.83% and also stepped up to do his first PSG. “Equidance have put together a fabulous music programme featuring Sia and it’s my favourite I’ve ever ridden to. I got a bit ahead of the music so had to make my half pass lines quite steep,” explained Jezz.

King IV (Governor x Johnson) is another talented seven-year-old and was the reserve Medium Regional Champion at Bicton. He won the Advanced Medium 61 with over 72%.

Jezz’s most successful ride was Romanno Weltino who won two TopSpec Medium classes and the Medium Freestyle. She is a six-year-old mare owned by Melanie Morris and Carole Hurst. “She’s a cool mare and is going to be a cracking Grand Prix horse,” commented Jezz. “She’s a workaholic and has to be the first horse to be ridden each day.”

In the pick-your-own youth class, the highest scorer was Junior rider Ruby Hughes with Classic Bee Gee, followed by Sofia Games and Steendieks Cadillac.

Congratulations to all the competitors who took part. Many commented on the superb organisation which make the show run so smoothly. The organisers try hard to accommodate everyone’s requests and still have a smile on their faces at the end of the show!
