The High Profile Show at Bury Farm in Buckinghamshire (25 - 27 August 2023) saw Joseph Bright and Jezz Palmer take three wins each while Richard White made a rare appearance in the arena to clinch Sunday’s Grand Prix.
Joseph Bright and the Flake mare, Fame III, pictured above, won two Prix St Georges (PSG) classes and an Inter I. He has been riding Karen Cleave’s mare for five years. She was bought from her German breeder as a later-starting just-backed five-year-old and Joseph has produced her up the levels.
“She’ a work horse who always tries for you,” said Joseph who is based in Kent. “She’s very little competition experience so this show was about getting her to relax in the arena. I found it really useful having a three-day show. It was a nice surprise to do so well and keep the consistency of score throughout. Our aim was to get qualifying scores to compete international and we’ve done that.
“I’ve been training with Stephen Moore for the last four months and have felt a difference, mainly in my confidence going to shows.”
Steph Wood’s WGS Kapri (Dreamboy x Don Graphit) delivered wins in Advanced Medium 95 and 92 for Hampshire-based Jezz Palmer. “I’ve been getting him out to some competitions for Steph to get him qualified for the Winters. He hasn’t been out for a while so every time he went in the arena he got more confident,” explained Jezz, who was also second in the Advanced Medium Freestyle with Kapri. “His changes have come on a lot. They are big and expressive but weren’t always straight. He’s for sale as a Junior horse and he’ll teach someone an awful lot.”
Jezz has been riding his Advanced Medium Freestyle winner, Romanno Weltino (Dante Weltino x Donnerhall), pictured above, since she was three. She is owned by Melanie Morris and Carole Hurst. “I don’t think there’ll ever be a horse that loves working as much as she does. I ride her first every day and she kicks the door if I don’t. There seems to be no limit for her – she’s never tired, ever.”
Sunday’s Grand Prix winner, Richard White believes he has ‘the best trainer in the world’, his wife, Finnish Olympian Kyra Kyrklund. It was his own and Lynda Cameron’s Lusitano Heroi Do Seixo, pictured below, a son of Olympic horse Rubi AR, that has tempted him back into the show ring.
“I started competing in FEI competition a year ago – I’d not done it before and I thought I should take the opportunity. Heroi has been relatively easy to train. He’s willing to learn and thinks everything is fun. He hasn’t had much competition experience so gets excited and over-enthusiastic. In the Saturday class he was wanting to look at everything but on Sunday he was much more relaxed. At the moment I’m only getting about 50-60% of what I get at home.”
Emile Faurie and Diana Rose’s Bellevue (Bordeaux x Brentano III) have had just one outing since the Windsor Horse Show - a trip to Holland in July for Kronenberg CDI3*. “She felt nice and fresh. She has very good piaffe and passage and an exceptional walk. She’s had two foals so could develop some more strength for the difficult movements.”
Emile’s head rider, Tom Goode was also in the ribbons in Saturday’s Inter I with Richard Jackson’s Fürstenrausch PS (Fürstenball x Festrauch). The eight-year-old was bought from Paul Schockemohle’s yard in Germany as a Grand Prix prospect for Tom.
“The first time I sat on him, I adored him,” said Tom. “He gives you a great feel and is a real natural for the collected work. He’s got a good aptitude for piaffe and passage – we’ve played a bit with what he’s offering but we’re allowing him to get stronger. I competed him at Novice to get him used to everything and then didn’t come out again until Advanced Medium. Since then, we’ve progressed fairly quickly to keep him occupied.”
Becky Edwards had had a competition break since June as she got married (Congratulations Becky!). Eleven-year-old Dita Van Teese was on good form and had a good win in Friday’s Inter I. “She used to be really tricky about spooking at new things but she went into the arena and just listened,” said Becky. “She felt really good and she was very happy to be back out competing.”
Inter I Freestyle honours were taken by Jane Turney and Caroline White’s Fortunas (Farewell III x Welton). Jayne has been riding him for 18 months and he is still based with Joy Dawes who originally trained him. She used an Equivisions-produced programme featuring Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Mulan and Lion King. “It’s music that makes me smile and I got lovely comments from the judges. It really suits him as he’s a little powerhouse and his ears are always pricked,” said Jayne.
Jess Dunn and White Hill Stud’s Dan It’s Carston (Durable x Clearway) celebrated their 15th win in a row when they took a PSG class. “I was really pleased with him,” reported Jess who trains with Richard Davison. “I made the four-hour journey here on my own – it felt like being back at Pony Club. “We’ve been struggling with a few issues recently, mainly in the pirouettes, so I put a few ideas into practise. He’s still new to the level and requires more strength and practise. He’s got a superb character and I think that comes from Durable.”
Anna Jesty and Bronte Watson’s Grolschstar had a personal best score in the Inter II. Anna took over the ride in April from Beth Bainbridge and the pair have been training quietly at home. “He struggles a bit with his nerves but we’re getting there,” commented Anna who has her own training yard in Dorset. “I was pleased how he handled himself and let me ride him throughout the test.”
Rowan Bryson admitted on social media that mistakes had relegated her and Izonik to third place in Inter I and PSG. However, on the last day, the pair came back fighting with a super 72.3% win in the PSG class. “It was a really good trip out for me and Sonic and I’m really pleased with him, even if he was like flying a kite when trying to walk him and he snapped a headcollar!”
It was a very busy show so congratulations to the organisers, judges, scorers and stewards and well done to all the competitors.
