British Equestrian opens applications for 2022 Young Professionals Programme cohort

British Equestrian is now accepting applications for the 2022/2023 cohort of its Sport England-funded Young Professionals Programme.

The Young Professionals Programme is designed to support the personal and career development of young people in the equestrian industry who have their own business or are looking to start one in the future. Delivered in collaboration with British Dressage, British Eventing and British Showjumping, the Programme is a series of interactive workshops both in person and online.

Those inducted onto the programme will have the opportunity to create a career development plan, and gain the skills and confidence they need to handle different situations that can occur in the workplace. Specialist speakers will cover a broad range of topics essential to running a business, ranging from contract-writing, employment law, insurance and finances, to conflict management, communication skills and building a personal brand.

“I’ve come away from every workshop having learnt something new – whether it be about myself and how I communicate with people, how to manage a team, a new fitness workout, the legalities of employment, insurance, finances and contracts, or developing a business plan,” explains showjumper Laura Edwards, who is about to graduate from the 2021/2022 cohort. “I have really appreciated every workshop and being part of the Young Professionals Programme.”

“The Young Professionals Programme has been so beneficial in so many ways,” agrees eventer Saffron Cresswell. “I have learnt the most about myself with regards to how to conduct myself around my staff and managing a team, which has begun to show in how strong my team is at home. Having the workshop days so regularly has given me routine and I have enjoyed networking with so many people, not just within my own discipline.”

For dressage rider Jacob Denman, it was the opportunity to network that stood out as a highlight of being on the Young Professionals Programme: “In addition to the workshop content, I was surrounded by other similar aged riders and trainers all at different stages in their careers,” he explains. “It has been great to talk and share ideas with them, and nice to see a few familiar faces from the programme out at competitions this year.

“If you can apply for the Young Professionals Program, then go for it. I think everyone regardless of the stage in their career would have a lot to gain.”

David Hamer, Head of Performance Pathways at British Equestrian, adds: “The difficulties of the last two years have highlighted more than ever the need to provide support to young people as they enter the workplace. The Young Professionals Programme provides a bespoke package of support and education that helps a young rider make the transition into the equestrian workforce. The overall programme aim is to equip them with the confidence and skillset to succeed and thrive in our industry.”
