As Storm Emma invaded the South West, the eighth and final Winter Regional Championship of 2018 was forced to move back a week, and thanks to a great effort by the team at Summerhouse, and much rescheduling by officials and competitors alike, the competition was a triumph.
Local girl Charlotte Dujardin was outstanding with her stable of elite young horses. The double Olympic Champion dominated her classes, securing eight tickets for next month’s NAF Five Star Winter Championships. In the Charles Owen Advanced Medium Gold she reigned supreme, taking the top three places with three seven-year-olds. It was Gio (Apache x Tango) - pictured - who had the edge, the compact, sporty gelding awarded a score average of 77.14% from judges Gloria Leverett, Richard Baldwin and Andrea Smith. In second was Emma Blundell’s Mount St John VIP (Vivaldi x Donnerhall) and taking third, Sarah Tyler-Evans’ Negro-sired River Rise Nisa. Charlotte and these two mares delivered strong performances to earn 76.09% and 75.30% respectively.
Continuing her ‘great day at the office’, Charlotte (32) went on to win the Magic Prix St Georges with Sarah Tyler-Evans’ River Rise Escarla, the nine-year-old Lord Leatherdale daughter awarded 74.52%. She also claimed the runner-up position with exciting prospect, Florentina VI (Vivaldi x Rubel). The talented grey ‘Flora’, whose year got underway with an assured PSG victory at Addington High Profile Show in January, took second with 73.28%.
Dujardin’s success carried on into day two. Aboard Hawtin’s San Floriana (San Amour x Florestan) a six-year-old mare she co-owns with Carl Hester, Charlotte delivered an outstanding performance to take the Blue Chip Novice Gold. The pair scored plus-80%. Then it was the turn of River Rise Nisa who marked her authority with a 77.92% victory in the Albion Medium Gold.
Day three saw further success for Dujardin as she took the Equi-Trek Elementary Gold aboard Hawtins San Floriana with an excellent mark of plus-78%. The mare, whose career was started under the expert guidance of Bryony Goodwin, won the Shearwater title as both a four- and five-year-old, and was bought by Charlotte and Carl [Hester] in 2017.
“The young horses continue to go from strength to strength,” says Charlotte. “And I enjoy the journey more and more with each and every one of them.”
The 2018 Winter Regionals will also be a competition to remember for Jane Morris (50) who hails from Chipping Sodbury. Jane enjoyed an outstanding Regional Championships winning not one, but two winning tickets to Hartpury with Quinet Du Buisson Z. Jane and her nine-year-old Dutch-bred son of Quart II Adelheid Z won both the Spillers Medium Freestyle Silver and the Nupafeed Advanced Medium Freestyle Silver scoring 74.77% and 71.66%.
No strangers to Hartpury Arena, the pair were well-placed at the NAF Five Star Winter Championships in 2016 and were runners-up in the Elementary Freestyle last year. Could they go one better to top the podium this year? We’ll have to wait and see!
British Dressage thanks all the team at Summerhouse Equestrian and everyone involved for rescheduling and making this competition happen after the challenging weather conditions. Huge thanks go to the class sponsors for a great competition and congratulations go to all qualified riders, and to everybody who rearranged their schedules to take part. We look forward to welcoming all qualified combinations to the NAF Five Star Winter Dressage Championships.
