High scores and double victories were the order of the day at the first Winter Regional Championships which took place over the weekend and earlier this week at Bishop Burton College in East Yorkshire (10 – 13 February 2018).
This year is the first that non-freestyle PSG and Inter I levels have featured. The winner of both tests - the Magic Prix St Georges and the Superflex Intermediate I - was Amy Woodhead with Branduardi, Victoria Peace’s Breiting W-sired stallion (pictured). The strapping chestnut and his young rider won with 71.05% and 73.60% respectively, with Emma Jablonski and Cor IV Z runners-up twice. Partners of one year, Amy and Branduardi are going from strength to strength, a highlight of their short time together being Addington High Profile where they won a highly competitive Inter I test.
Australian rider Jayden Brown, Head Resident Rider and Trainer at the Mount St John Stud was invincible aboard the eight-year-old mare Atterupgaards 02. The talented pair topped the tables in both the Equi-Trek Elementary Gold and the Albion Medium Gold. Atterupgaards 02 was bred by embryo transfer out of Fiona Bigwood’s Rio 2016 Olympic team silver partner, Atterupgaards Orthilia, and is by the prolific sire Belissimo M. Jayden and 02 were the highest scorers of the show with 75.10% and 75.81% taking both of their classes by a healthy margin.
Roxanne Shipley (23) and Bravoure, from North Yorkshire, went home with two victories to their name, the Charles Owen Advanced Medium Gold and the Nupafeed Advanced Medium Freestyle Gold. Roxanne took the ride on Bravoure, her sister Bethany’s former Junior partner, last August and they’ve not been placed out of the top two since. Twelve-year-old ‘Bravo’ is a Sandreo-sired KWPN gelding owned by Angela Shipley. Roxanne also qualified Show Sister, a seven-year-old Sarkozy daughter also owned by her mother Angela in the Spillers Medium Freestyle Gold.
“Bravo has done it again – Advanced Medium Gold Freestyle Champion!” said Roxanne on the Shipley Equestrian Facebook page after her second day of competition. “That’s three golden tickets to the Championships!”
Gary Foggon (40) from Buxton in Derbyshire won two freestyle regional titles – the Baileys Horse Feeds Novice Freestyle Gold and the PDS Saddles Elementary Freestyle Gold with his fabulous homebred horses, Who’s a Boozer and Gypsy Fortune, respectively. Gary and Who’s a Boozer, his seven-year-old grey part-bred Irish Draught were awarded 72.50%, and with Gypsy Fortune, his eight-year-old Grafenstolz daughter, he scored 73.65%.
British Dressage thanks Bishop Burton, the Winter Championships class sponsors and all involved for a successful Regional Championships. Congratulations to all qualified combinations and to everyone who took part.
