BD International: April roundup

With several international competitions taking place in the first few weeks of spring, we recap on the action and results at a host of April CDI and CPEDI fixtures. 

Tolbert CDI3*
 
Making his first overseas appearance since the FEI European Championships in 2021, Carl Hester visited Tolbert CDI 3* in the Netherlands (13 – 16 April) to present new ride Fame, owned by Fiona Bigwood, Penny Bigwood, Mette Dahl and Anders Dahl. Achieving a duo of wins, the well-suited combination scored 75.89% in the Grand Prix before going on to notch up 76.93% in the Grand Prix Special, leaving them four percent clear of the field. Next up for the Newent-based maestro is time on the UK CDI tour with visits to Windsor and Hickstead in May, with both the Fame (Bordeaux 28 x Rhodium) and Tokyo 2020 ride En Vogue.

Le Mans CDI4*/CDI1*/CDIU25/CDIY/J/P/Ch-A

A strong British contingent travelled to Le Mans in France to contest the CDI4*, CDI1*, CDIU25, CDIY, CDIJ, CDIP and CDICh-A competition taking place on 13 – 16 April 2023. British team stalwart Gareth Hughes made an overseas debut with his own, Rebecca Hughes and Julia Hornig’s Goldstrike L.E, with the chestnut Tango-sired gelding showing much promise in the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special tests. Anna Ross produced Marcelo Tosi’s striking grey Habouche to a runner up position in the Grand Prix Special test, whilst Sarah Millis gained valuable mileage with the bright prospect Impressive VDC. Annabella Pidgley achieved a hattrick of wins a CDIU25 level in her first continental appearance with Sarah Pidgley’s successful Vamos Amigos, the duo built in confidence throughout the week and posted three impressive scores. Whilst in the CDI1* Small Tour competition, Sarah Higgins and pupils Ottilie Bardley and Sarah Rao achieved a week to remember; returning former youth team rider Ottilie made a sublime senior debut with the British-bred mare Hawtins Soave (Sir Donnerhall x Belissimo M) earning a clean sweep of top three placings, whilst Sarah also achieved strong results, including a close second position on day one, with Sarah Rao’s ten year old Samuel.

Competing alongside their fellow compatriots in the CDIO Youth Nations Cup, British youth riders riding as individuals enjoyed promising results. Lily Laughton made a winning international debut with Alicia Laughton's Skovborgs Romadinov, taking first place in the Young Rider Team Test, whilst Lilah Gibbs and her Dancier x Rubinstein gelding, Dude III, achieved strong results with podium placings in both the Young Rider Individual and Freestyle tests. The combination of Isabella Caldwell and Don Geniro, a Don Kennedy x Giorgione gelding owned by Alex Hua Tian, Pip Higgins, Pam Dews and Sarah Higgins, were best of the Brits in the Juniors, achieving third place in the Team and Freestyle tests. In the Pony division, Fleur Pocock, competing at her first overseas international, took fourth place in the Pony Team Test aboard Brouwershaven's Jasper, while Addington CDI winner, Mimi Kempster with Rachael Sinden-Kempster's Che Bello impressed at their first CDI abroad. Mimi and Che Bello, contesting the Children on Horses, started their week with second place in the Preliminary Test B and also took the runner-up spot in the Children Individual Test on a PB of 74.10%.

Waregem CPEDI3*

Four talented British para dressage riders travelled to Waregem, Belgium, on 21 – 24 April and showed strong results throughout the week. Newark’s Gabriella Blake rode to two podium places with her own grey gelding Strong Beau, and only narrowly missed the hattrick with a first day fourth place. Nicola Naylor, Katie Radzik and Charlotte Cundall each achieved placings in their respective grades, with each rider improving on their scores throughout the week.

Hagen CDI4*

London 2012 team gold medallist, Laura Tomlinson travelled to Germany for the prestigious Hagen CDI4*, this year themed 'Horses & Dreams meets Sweden' (18 - 23 April 2023). Partnered by her own and Ursula Bechtolsheimer's talented gelding, Fallatijn (Vivaldi x Cabochon), Laura achieved 11th place in the CDI4* Grand Prix for Freestyle. The duo moved up the leaderboard to ninth spot in the Freestyle, which took place under floodlights on the Saturday evening, performing an impressive programme to a compilation of Coldplay hits, for 75.42%.
