Clean Sport
It's vital if you are competing at a national or international level you understand the rules and guidance surrounding anti-doping – both for humans and equines.
Clean Sport is an anti-doping programme to protect fair play of the sport as well as the health and welfare of the human and equine athlete. Horses, riders, grooms, owners, stable managers, trainers, therapist and vets can be affected.
Testing can be done at competitions of any level and no one is exempt. Equine anti-doping and controlled medication rules apply to all equines athletes at all levels; from grass roots to the highest level.
Competing Nationally and Internationally
If you are competing at national or international levels you need to ensure you understand all of the anti-doping rules and advice for both humans and equines:
- Competing Nationally: you need to ensure you abide by the BEF's equine anti-doping and controlled medication rules (BEFAR) and the BEF rulebook
- Competing Internationally: consult the FEI anti-doping regulations, including the FEI Prohibited Substances List

The World Anti-Doping Code
The World Anti-Doping Code is the core document that harmonizes anti-doping policies, rules and regulations within sport organizations and among public authorities around the world. It works in conjunction with eight International Standards which aim to foster consistency among anti-doping organizations in various areas. Here you can find a list of prohibited substances - which substances and methods are prohibited at all times, in-competition only, and within specific sports.
The 2024 Prohibited List for the human athlete has now been released by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and it will come into effect on 1st January 2024. While no major changes have been made, further examples of prohibited substances have been added to various categories of the 2024 Prohibited List.
WADA’s 2024 Monitoring Program lists substances which are not on the Prohibited List but are currently being monitored for potential misuse.
